Concussion Care

Specialized Occupational Therapy for Concussion Recovery

Ironclad Human Performance provides specialized concussion rehabilitation through telehealth for patients throughout Washington State.

Dr. Carolyn van der Meulen, OTD, OTR/L, Cert. VRS, CFVRS specializes in concussion rehabilitation, with a focus on understanding the clinical profile and functional demands contributing to each person's recovery.

While Dr. van der Meulen has specialized experience working with first responders, concussion rehabilitation is available to individuals of all backgrounds and occupations. Whether you're dealing with persistent symptoms or having difficulty returning to work, exercise, school, or everyday activities, care is tailored to where you are in recovery and what you need to get back to doing.

Concussion Doesn't Follow One Path

Most people recover relatively quickly after a concussion. Others experience persistent, changing, or overlapping symptoms. Concussion can affect multiple systems, and the factors contributing to symptoms can differ from person to person. Identifying your clinical profile helps guide a more targeted rehabilitation approach.

From Clinical Profile to Rehabilitation

Evaluation considers how your symptoms respond to movement, visual demands, physical exertion, cognitive activity, and other functional challenges. Depending on your presentation, rehabilitation may include:

  • Vestibular and balance rehabilitation
  • Visual and oculomotor activities
  • Progressive cardiovascular exercise
  • Functional movement and activity progression
  • Cervical and musculoskeletal interventions within occupational therapy scope
  • Education and symptom-management strategies
  • Progressive return to work, exercise, recreation, and other meaningful activities

The goal isn't simply to reduce symptoms. It's to restore your ability to participate in the things that matter to you.

Recovery Is Dynamic

Your care plan can change as recovery progresses. An activity that initially provokes symptoms may become easier with rehabilitation, while more demanding environments may reveal challenges that weren't apparent earlier in recovery.

Treatment therefore evolves with you.

Rather than avoiding every activity that produces symptoms, rehabilitation uses appropriately dosed activity and progressive exposure to rebuild tolerance and capacity.

Persistent Symptoms

If symptoms continue weeks or months after your injury, rehabilitation can help identify the factors contributing to ongoing limitations and develop a targeted plan forward. Persistent symptoms do not necessarily mean permanent damage. They mean there is more to understand.

Telehealth Across Washington

Concussion rehabilitation is provided via telehealth to patients located in Washington State. Telehealth allows rehabilitation to be integrated into your actual environment and daily routines, including assessment, education, exercise progression, activity modification, and other appropriate interventions.
